When a garden hose gets a kink in it, it doesn’t allow the water to pass through it properly which causes stress; I use this comparison a lot because the same rule can be applied to your spine in regards to subluxations. A subluxation is slight misalignment of the bones in your spine called vertebrae. When this happens in the body it sends signals to the brain causing an increase in stress and pain.
There have been numerous studies conducted to see the response of the autonomic nervous system based on the area of the spine that is adjusted through chiropractic. For those who do not know what the autonomic nervous system is; it is the division of the nervous system that controls the involuntary actions of your muscles and glands. These studies have demonstrated that the sympathetic tone of the nervous system were subdued as well as decreased. The sympathetic division of the nervous system (sympathetic tone) is the part that motivates our body’s response to stress. These studies indicated that there was a decrease in the body’s fight or flight physiology and that there was regional brain metabolic changes though adjustments.
When we look at the components behind these studies they don’t indicate a hard bone on a soft nerve, they backup the plausibility that subluxations lead to increased stress and pain responses. When there is an increase in sympathetic tone this means an increase of stress hormones.
